How do I
reserve ShipWatch?
Simply send us an
email with any questions and your intended vacation
dates. Assuming availability and your
interest, we will send you a contract via email.
Upon receipt of the contract and your deposit check,
we 'lock' your week.
Why Bald Head Island?
The island has no
bridge access and no cars on the island. This
results in a protected natural paradise. Kids
are free to ride bikes and explore beaches.
Parents are free to relax and truly unwind.
Simply ask anyone who has been to the island
before...they will confirm that the island is
unparalleled.
What makes ShipWatch unique?
ShipWatch is
ideally located on West Beach. This beach is
easy to access (across the street) and is a large,
spacious beach that is uncrowded. Most guests
comment on the fantastic over-the-water sunset
views. Many also comment that they (and their
kids) enjoy watching the yachts sail by the house as
they approach the Cape Fear Inlet. Being a
private home that is rented direct by the owner, we
have the flexibility and interest in ensuring your
vacation is fantastic.
Why
rent direct?
Because the
island rental companies often take a big chunk of
rental payments (up to 40%), it makes your stay
expensive. However, by renting direct, we can
rent more often and save you money. Equally
important, you will be a guest in our home.
We offer a personal touch and pride of ownership
that a big company simply cannot match.
How do we get to the house?
Take the ferry to the island from Southport. Tell the tram driver to take you to ShipWatch. (Note: the ferry folks will unload your car at Southport and take all items directly to the ShipWatch with you). Once there you will have access to the golf cart keys inside. When you are ready to depart the island, have the tram service pick you up at ShipWatch and take you back to the ferry.
Do we have to have ferry reservations?
No. However, reservations are strongly
recommended if you will be needing tram service to
the house. This is especially true during
holidays.
Is there a grocery store on the island?
Yes. In fact, the prices are not outrageous. While typically 10-15% higher than the mainland, the island grocery store does offer a wide variety of items. There is a Super-WalMart at Southport if you need to get some last minute items.
(Note: many families will freeze a lasagna or casserole if staying for a week - this saves you meal prep hassles.) All items must be in
cardboard or plastic boxes for transport on the ferry (no paper bags).
Can I get
access to the two island clubs?
Yes. There
are two clubs on the island: The Bald Head
Island Club is a golf / tennis / croquet club
and the Shoals club is a beach / pool club.
Both have dining facilities. We pay the
substantial initiation fees and all monthly club
dues. There is a guest fee however, that
you would pay if you desire access to either
club. This fee is typically nominal and
paid once per rental week. Check with us
for current pricing.
Are there restaurants on the island?
Yes. There is a
nice restaurant at the club, a casual dining
restaurant at the marina, and an indoor/outdoor
seafood restaurant at the marina. Also, an ice cream
shop is located in the marina area.
Do you allow pets?
Please email or call for more information on our pet policy.
How do we get the contract & keys to ShipWatch?
We will email you a contract for review and signature. Upon receipt of a signed contract AND 50% rental deposit, we consider your reservation firm. We will then email you a lock box combo. Once at ShipWatch use the lockbox to get the house keys. The cart keys will be inside the house. PLEASE leave the original key in the lockbox (It is a good backup in case you lock yourself out).
What baby items do you keep at the house?
We have a pack-n-play, a high chair, and a fan.
(The fan is noisy which is great white noise to help kids get to sleep.)
Do you have bicycles at ShipWatch?
We do. However, we make no claims or warranty about their condition. Because the island air is so tough on metal and because the bikes status changes throughout the season, we make no claims about bicycle condition. Because the ferry places a hefty surcharge on transporting bikes, we recommend renting any bikes that you might need from the island bicycle rental firm.
What amenities/appliances do you have at ShipWatch?
We have a washer/dryer, dishwasher, disposal, stereo, tv w/ cable (2), VCRs (2), board games, ceiling fans in all bedrooms, etc. The kitchen is fully stocked. A/C is dual unit for separate upstairs/downstairs controls. The porch has a hammock, rocking chairs and tables. There is a outside shower under the house. Also under the house is a decked play area with picnic table, chair swing, and hammock.
How do you handle trash on the island?
Trash is kept in a latched (think raccoons) closet under the house. There is a Yes/No sign on the front pillar. Simply switch the sign to the red "Yes" side once you have placed any trash in the closet.
How are maintenance issues handled?
We ask guests to
keep us posted if any repairs are needed (even minor
ones - such as light bulbs). If by chance any
more significant issue arise, simply call us and we
will immediately send someone to ShipWatch.
Are there any
island rules?
Yes. Here are a
few key rules: You must hold a valid driver's
license to operate a golf cart. No fires are
permitted within 50 feet of a wooden structure.
Children must wear bike helmets when on bicycles.
Other island regulations will be posted at
ShipWatch.
